CHAPTER FIVE

ADAPTATION

COM CHATTER

- .50 CAL: a heavy-duty bullet used in larger machine guns

- AMBUSH: the act of lying concealed in order to surprise an enemy

-OVERWATCH: a small unit that helps observe the battlefield

- TRACKER: a device that tracks the location of something or someone

The team’s Ospreys traversed the darkening Malian sky. “Speak your mind, Lieutenant,” Cross said to Jannati, who hadn’t said a word since the Ospreys had arrived in Cadran Solaire. Also on his Osprey were Lancaster and Yamashita. The other Osprey carried Walker, Shepherd, Paxton and Williams. Lancaster sat hunched over her laptop computer, the glow from the screen illuminating her face.

“We can’t just leave them there, Commander,” Jannati said. He was no longer scowling or frowning, but he still didn’t look happy. “Those people have no idea what this guy is going to do to them.”

“I agree completely, Lieutenant,” Cross said. He’d spent the first several minutes of the flight getting back in touch with Command to request any available intelligence on this Bubaga character Jannati had pummeled and humiliated. The file Command had sent back read like something out of a comic book villain’s biography. Bubaga’s wartime atrocities were almost as bad as the crimes Bubaga’s own criminal gang had wrought against the civilians who defied him.

“That’s why we’re not leaving,” Cross said.

Jannati blinked. “I beg your pardon, Sir?”

“If we were just turning tail and going home, we could’ve driven the Growlers back to the air field,” Cross explained. “Bringing the Ospreys in and dusting off like we did was all for show. I wanted Bubaga to see us leaving and think the village is undefended.”

“You’re sure he was watching?” Jannati asked dubiously.

“Lancaster?” Cross said, looking at the combat controller.

“His Jeep stopped about half a mile outside Cadran Solaire and waited there until we’d lifted off and were out of sight,” Lancaster said, looking up from her laptop. “He took up his original heading after that. I’ll let you know when he stops again.”
